How surcharges stack
A US store charging a European customer in euros pays 2.9% + 1.5% + 1% = 5.4% + 30¢. On a €100 order that is about €5.70 instead of €3.20. Tick the international and conversion boxes above to see it.
Formulas
- Fee = amount × rate + $0.30
- Payout = amount − fee
- Charge needed to net X = (X + 0.30) ÷ (1 − rate)
Ways to lower Stripe costs
- Raise the average order value. The 30¢ fixed fee is 6% of a $5 order but 0.3% of a $100 one.
- Offer ACH for large B2B invoices — capped at $5.
- Price in the customer’s currency with a local account where you have enough volume, to avoid conversion fees.
- Ask for custom pricing once you process significant monthly volume.
