When an image cannot be converted, visitors get the original. Nothing on the page breaks. The reason is listed in Media → Pixavif → Tools → Error log and next to the image in the Conversion history.
| Message | What to do |
|---|---|
| The server ran out of memory on this image | Raise the PHP memory limit. See Memory limit. Then click Try them again. |
| This image took too long to convert | Usually very large photos on slow hosting. Set Images converted at the same time to 1 under Settings → Automation and try again. |
| The original file is missing from the server | The Media Library entry points to a file that was deleted. Upload the image again or remove the entry. |
| The image library failed to convert this file | The file may be damaged or use an unusual color profile. Open it in an image editor, save it again as JPEG or PNG, and upload it again. |
| This image is larger than 30 MB / wider or taller than 16000 px | Resize it before uploading. Such files are too big for a web page anyway. |
| Skipped: the converted file would be larger | Not an error. The original is already very small, so it stays as it is. |
| Skipped: animated GIFs are not converted | Not an error. Animated GIFs stay as they are so the animation keeps working. |
| Skipped: this is a CMYK print image | Not an error. CMYK files carry print colors that AVIF and WebP can’t keep, so the original stays. Export the image as RGB (sRGB) and upload it again to convert it. |
| Skipped: too small to gain anything | Not an error. Images under 64 x 64 pixels save only a few bytes. |
| Skipped: this file is already WebP or AVIF | Not an error. The Media Library lists the image as JPEG or PNG, but the file itself was already converted, for example by another plugin. There is nothing more to gain. |
| Skipped: your server’s image library can’t keep transparency in this format | Not an error. Older image libraries (ImageMagick 6 on Debian 11 and 12 or Ubuntu 22.04) drop AVIF transparency, so a logo would get a solid background. The other format or the original is used instead. Ask your host for ImageMagick 7 or PHP 8.1 or newer with GD AVIF support to get AVIF for these images. |
| Skipped: this photo uses a wide color profile | Not an error. Photos from iPhones and many cameras use Display P3 or Adobe RGB. GD can’t keep that profile, so the colors would change; the original stays. With Imagick these photos convert normally. |
Try again
On the Overview, click Try them again in the notice, or pick Retry failed in the conversion card menu. In the Media Library, choose Failed in the Pixavif filter to see the images, select them and use the bulk action Convert with Pixavif.
